Thoughts on 11 Movies Coming Out in 2017

Happy New Year! I’m excited for 2017 and especially for movies coming out in 2017. There will obviously be hidden gems that come out of nowhere and blow me away, but today I want to mostly speak about the bigger movies. We received trailers from a ton of movies coming out this year and i’m excited for quite a few of them.

split

#1. Split

M. Night Shyamalan’s new film split isn’t a movie we’ll have to wait for much longer as it comes out later on this month. I understand that Shyamalan is a polarizing figure in film since his fall from glory, but I still believe in him. When he released The Visit I was a bit skeptical about which direction that movie would go, but as I was watching it I was reminded that Shyamalan can produce good movies. The Visit was a very entertaining low budget movie, and seeing that Split is going to be another low budget film gives me hope. On top of that I can’t help but be curious about how James McAvoy tackles playing a character with so many different personalities. I’ll throw in Anya Taylor-Joy as a selling point for this movie too, because she was excellent in The Witch.  Definitely something I’m looking forward to.

#2. Ghost in the Shell

The movie adaptation of the anime classic Ghost in the Shell is one that has caught my interest over time. When I first heard about the movie I didn’t think much of it because I didn’t think it had a chance to succeed. But the more footage I saw, the more hopeful I became. The visuals from the trailers tell me they’re ripping scenes straight from the original movie and that gets me excited. I understand the controversy about whitewashing and how they should have cast an Asian lead for the movie, but personally, if i’m bringing this movie to the states, Scarlett Johansson is the ideal choice for this role. A movie like Lucy that wasn’t even good, made over 450 million dollars simply because she was the lead. I’m still a bit nervous that it’s going to be reduced to a simple action movie, but as a fan of anime, and the original film, I’m looking forward to this.

#3. Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2

I’m concerned if you aren’t excited for this movie. When I first saw Guardians of the Galaxy I was blown away with how funny it was. All of that Marvel style humor that they shove into other movies comes across natural with these characters. The cast is excellent and that teaser trailer is absolutely hysterical. Adding Baby Groot becomes something else for the team to play off of and I expect it to be one of Marvel’s best.

#4. Wonder Woman

There’s a lot riding on this movie. First reason is simply because of how piss poor DC’s 2016 efforts were. With this being a DC film not directed by Zack Snyder, it’s an opportunity for a fresh look into this cinematic Universe. The second reason is because this is Wonder Woman. Female Superhero movies don’t happen often and if this movie is successful it might get people to make more of them. I certainly hope this one works out, but at this point i’m just cautiously optimistic.

#5. Transformers: The Last Knight

Yeah this franchise is awful. Ever since the first movie which was okay at best, Michael Bay has done his best to run this movie franchise into the ground. I honestly don’t know how anyone could be excited for this movie at all, especially after that terrible trailer they released. These movies either need to stop being released, or need to be handed over to someone who cares about the product.

spider-man

#6. Spider-Man: Homecoming

Is anyone else tired of Spider-Man movies? Well I actually am. I think this movie is going to be pretty good with Marvel being involved with the property, but I just can’t get excited about it. The most exciting thing about this movie to me is Michael Keaton playing the Vulture. It’s always nice to see Keaton in movies and I think he’s going to own this role. Maybe i’m just burnt out on Peter Parker.

logan

#7. Logan

The final appearance of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine is bound to get some people excited, me included. I’m not really a fan of Hugh Jackman, and the Wolverine movies were bad too, but knowing this is his last time playing such an iconic character has me hoping they give him a proper farewell. All indications are that Logan will be very different from the previous Wolverine movies. The trailer depicted a movie that would be darker and more dramatic. That shift in tone is what really grabbed me in. Maybe i’m getting my hopes too high, but I think there’s potential for this movie to be excellent.

#8. Justice League

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was not a good movie by any stretch, but I feel like this will be better. Less Superman and more Batman sounds like a good idea, and I’m interested to see what Jason Momoa’s Aquaman can add to the cast. My anticipation for this movie may go up or down depending on how Wonder Woman lands up being, but for now i’m curious to see where the movie goes. The trailer didn’t really do it any favors though, because if the trailer is an accurate representation of the tone of the movie, then we’re possibly in for a train wreck.

john-wick-2

#9. John Wick 2

One of my favorite action movies of the last few years was definitely John Wick, because of Keanu Reeves and the brilliant action sequences. Thrown into the movie was also some crafty world building that I hoped would be explored even more. John Wick 2 looks like it will be similar to the first movie, but larger in scale. The addition of Laurence Fishburne to the cast brings together the 2 leads from my favorite action movie of all time, The Matrix. That may not mean much to some people, but it’s a moment I can’t wait to see.

#10. Beauty and the Beast

If I was asked if I wanted to see a live action Beauty and the Beast movie a few years ago I would have laughed and walked away. Asking me the same question now will get a completely different response. With other live action adaptations like Cinderella and Jungle Book, I have to consider that this might actually be an improvement to the original animated movie. Jungle Book especially opened my eyes because of how it blew the animated movie out of the water. Disney hasn’t let me down yet so I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt here.

#11. War for the Planet of the Apes

This is the movie I’m the most excited for. I loved the first two movies and this one looks like it has potential to place this Planet of the Apes trilogy on the list of the all time greats. I recently went back and rewatched Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and loved it even more. It’s a movie that creeps higher and higher on my all time favorite movies list. Andy Serkis is someone who deserves more credit for his masterful performance as Caesar. In every movie they surround him with different pieces and he continues to knock it out the park. The first movie had James Franco, The second had Gary Oldman, and now War for the Planet of the Apes has Woody Harrelson. I have no doubt that this movie will be fantastic.
